L. Rodriguez-Mañas, I. Araujo de Carvalho, S. Bhasin,et al.

J Frailty Aging. 2020;9(1):4-8. doi: 10.14283/jfa.2019.32.

The International Conference on Frailty and Sarcopenia Research (ICFSR) Task Force - a group of academic and industry scientists from around the world -- met in February 2019 to discuss the current state of biomarker development for frailty and sarcopenia.

Sarcopenia Definition: The Position Statements of the Sarcopenia Definition and Outcomes Consortium

S. Bhasin, T.G. Travison, T.M. Maniniz, et al.

J Am Geriatr Soc. 2020 Mar 9. doi: 10.1111/jgs.16372. [Epub ahead of print]

The aim was to develop an evidence-based definition of sarcopenia that can facilitate identification of older adults at risk for clinically relevant outcomes (eg, self-reported mobility limitation, falls, fractures, and mortality), the Sarcopenia Definition and Outcomes Consortium (SDOC) crafted a set of position statements informed by a literature review and SDOC's analyses of eight epidemiologic studies, six randomized clinical trials, four cohort studies of special populations, and two nationally representative population-based studies.

Diet quality and risk of frailty among older women in the Nurses' Health Study

E.A. Struijk, K.A. Hagan, T.T. Fung, et al.

Am J Clin Nutr. 2020 Feb 24. pii: nqaa028. doi: 10.1093/ajcn/nqaa028. [Epub ahead of print]

We aimed to evaluate the alternate Mediterranean diet (AMED), the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, and the alternate Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI-2010) in association with frailty risk among older women.

The Tilburg Frailty Indicator (TFI): New Evidence for Its Validity

R.J. Gobbens, P. Boersma, I. Uchmanowicz, et al.

Clin Interv Aging. 2020;15:265-274

The Tilburg Frailty Indicator (TFI) is a self-report user-friendly questionnaire for assessing multidimensional frailty among community-dwelling older people. The main aim of this study is to re-evaluate the validity of the TFI, both cross-sectionally and longitudinally, focusing on the predictive value of the total TFI and its physical, psychological, and social domains for adverse outcomes disability, indicators of healthcare utilization, and falls.

The accuracy of the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index in detecting frailty and sarcopenia in hospitalized older adults

D. Rasheedy and W.H. El-Kawaly

Aging Clin Exp Res. 2020 Feb 8. doi: 10.1007/s40520-020-01492-5. [Epub ahead of print]

The aim was to evaluate the accuracy of the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) in identifying frailty and sarcopenia in hospitalized older adults.

Protein-Related Dietary Parameters and Frailty Status in Older Community-Dwellers across Different Frailty Instruments

H.J. Coelho-Júnior, R. Calvani, A. Picca, et al.

Nutrients. 2020;12(2). pii: E508. doi: 10.3390/nu12020508.

The present study investigated the associations between frailty status and (a) daily protein intake, (b) daily body weight-adjusted protein intake, (c) branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) consumption, (d) evenness of protein distribution across main meals, (e) number of daily meals providing at least 30 g of protein, and (f) number of daily meals providing at least 0.4 g protein/kg of body weight in community-dwelling older adults. The relationship between frailty status and protein-related dietary parameters was explored across different frailty assessment tools.

Sarcopenia in Community-Dwelling Oldest Old Is Associated with Disability and Poor Physical Function

W. Xu, T. Chen, Y. Cai, et al.

J Nutr Health Aging. 2020;24(23):339-345. doi: 10.1007/s12603-020-1325-4.

Sarcopenia is an age-related geriatric syndrome and is associated with numerous adverse outcomes. Although there is preponderance of studies on sarcopenia in community setting, few studies focused on the oldest old. We investigated the prevalence of sarcopenia in Chinese community-dwelling oldest old and examined the socio-demographic and lifestyle factors of sarcopenia. We also investigated the association between sarcopenia and disability in activities of daily living (ADL) and physical function among the oldest old.

Predictive Accuracy of Frailty Tools for Adverse Outcomes in a Cohort of Adults 80 Years and Older: A Decision Curve Analysis

E. Hegendörfer , B. Vaes, G. Van Pottelbergh, et al.

J Am Med Dir Assoc. 2019 Oct 30. pii: S1525-8610(19)30646-2. doi: 10.1016/j.jamda.2019.08.029. [Epub ahead of print]

The aim was to compare the predictive performance of 3 frailty identification tools for mortality, hospitalization, and functional decline in adults aged ≥80 years using risk reclassification statistics and decision curve analysis.
