Higher protein intake is associated with a lower likelihood of frailty among older women, Kuopio OSTPRE-Fracture Prevention Study

M. Isanejad, J. Sirola, T. Rikkonen, et al.

Eur J Nutr. 2019 May 7. doi: 10.1007/s00394-019-01978-7. [Epub ahead of print]

Nordic nutrition recommendations (2012) suggest protein intake ≥ 1.1 g/kg body weight (BW) to preserve physical function in Nordic older adults. However, no published study has used this cut-off to evaluate the association between protein intake and frailty. This study examined associations between protein intake, and sources of protein intake, with frailty status at the 3-year follow-up.

Nutrient-rich, high-quality, protein-containing dairy foods in combination with exercise in aging persons to mitigate sarcopenia

S.M. Phillips, W. Martinson

Nutr Rev. 2019;77(4):216-229

This narrative review provides evidence to support a recommendation for per-meal protein targets in older persons that are underpinned by knowledge of muscle protein turnover.

Associations between dietary patterns at age 71 and the prevalence of sarcopenia 16 years later

M. Karlsson, W. Becker, K. Michaëlsson, et al.

Clin Nutr. 2019 Apr 18. pii: S0261-5614(19)30182-7. doi: 10.1016/j.clnu.2019.04.009. [Epub ahead of print]

The growing recognition of the significance of sarcopenia has highlighted the need to understand etiologic factors, where food intake likely plays a role. The aim was to investigate the association between dietary patterns at mean age 71 and the prevalence of sarcopenia at mean age 87 in a Swedish cohort of community dwelling men.

Effect of nutritional supplementations on physical performance and muscle strength parameters in older people: A systematic review and meta-analysis

N .Veronese, B. Stubbs, L. Punzi, et al.

Ageing Res Rev. 2019;51:48-54

Malnutrition plays a role in the development of poor physical performance, frailty and sarcopenia. The use of nutritional supplementations for improving physical performance and muscle strength parameters in older people is unclear. We therefore aimed to summarize the effect of nutritional supplementations compared to placebo on physical performance (i.e. tests more investigating physical function, utilising aerobic capacity & muscle power) and muscle strength (i.e. tests depending on muscle power) outcomes in older people in randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

Thirteen weeks of supplementation of vitamin D and leucine-enriched whey protein nutritional supplement attenuates chronic low-grade inflammation in sarcopenic older adults: the PROVIDE study

K. Liberman, R. Njemini, Y. Luiking, et al.

Aging Clin Exp Res. 2019 May 2. doi: 10.1007/s40520-019-01208-4. [Epub ahead of print]

A chronic low-grade inflammatory profile (CLIP) is associated with sarcopenia in older adults. Protein and Vitamin (Vit)D have immune-modulatory potential, but evidence for effects of nutritional supplementation on CLIP is limited. The aim was to investigate whether 13 weeks of nutritional supplementation of VitD and leucine-enriched whey protein affected CLIP in subjects enrolled in the PROVIDE-study, as a secondary analysis.

Sarcopenia and its association with falls and fractures in older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis

S.S.Y. Yeung, E.M. Reijniers, V.K. Pham, et al.

J Cachexia Sarcopenia Muscle. 2019 Apr 16. doi: 10.1002/jcsm.12411. [Epub ahead of print]

Sarcopenia is a potentially modifiable risk factor for falls and fractures in older adults, but the strength of the association between sarcopenia, falls, and fractures is unclear. This study aims to systematically assess the literature and perform a meta-analysis of the association between sarcopenia with falls and fractures among older adults.

Gait speed as a mediator of the effect of sarcopenia on dependency in activities of daily living

M.A. Perez-Sousa, L.C. Venegas-Sanabria, D.A. Chavarro-Carvajal, et al.

J Cachexia Sarcopenia Muscle. 2019 May 8. doi: 10.1002/jcsm.12444. [Epub ahead of print]

Sarcopenia in older adults is strongly associated with an increase in dependency in activities of daily living (ADL) and with a decline in gait speed. Interestingly, gait speed has been shown to independently predict mortality. In this context, our study aimed to explore the mediator role of gait speed on the relationship between sarcopenia and dependency in ADL.

Sex-specific differences in the association of vitamin D with low lean mass and frailty: Results from the Berlin Aging Study II

D. Spira, N. Buchmann, M. König, et al.

Nutrition. 2019;62:1-6

Sex-specific differences in factors associated with aging and lifespan, such as sarcopenia and disease development, are increasingly recognized. The study aims to assess sex-specific aspects of the association between vitamin D insufficiency and low lean mass as well as between vitamin D insufficiency and the frailty phenotype.

Impact of Sarcopenia and Frailty in a Multicenter Cohort of Polypathological Patients

M. Bernabeu-Wittel, Á. González-Molina, R. Fernández-Ojeda, et al.

J Clin Med. 2019 Apr 18;8(4). pii: E535. doi: 10.3390/jcm8040535.

We performed a multicenter prospective observational study in six hospitals in order to assess prevalence, clinical features, outcome and associated risk factors of sarcopenia and frailty in a hospital-based population of polypathological patients.

Ultrasound measurement of rectus femoris muscle thickness as a quick screening test for sarcopenia assessment

K. Rustani, L. Kundisova, P.L. Capecchi, et al.

Arch Gerontol Geriatr. 2019;83:151-154

According to European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) the diagnosis of sarcopenia requires the assessment of muscle mass, muscle force and function, that is time-consuming and not easily at hand in everyday clinical practice. We propose the B-mode ultrasound measurement of muscle thickness as a quick screening test to assess the presence of sarcopenia.
