Reduced plasma concentration of branched-chain amino acids in sarcopenic older subjects: a cross-sectional study

I. Ottestad, S.M. Ulven, L.K.L. Øyri, et al.

Br J Nutr. 2018;120(4):445-453

Branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) are essential amino acids that are necessary for muscle mass maintenance. Little is known about the plasma concentrations of BCAA and the protein intake in relation to sarcopenia. We aimed to compare the non-fasting plasma concentrations of the BCAA and the dietary protein intake between sarcopenic and non-sarcopenic older adults.

Assessment of Skeletal Muscle Mass in Older People: Comparison Between 2 Anthropometry-Based Methods and Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry

V. Carnevale, V. Castriotta, P.A. Piscitelli, et al.

J Am Med Dir Assoc. 2018;19(9):793-796

Sarcopenia is a common geriatric syndrome, whose diagnosis implies the assessment of muscle mass. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the reference method for clinical practice, but it is not universally available. In this cross-sectional study, we compared DXA with 2 anthropometry-based methods to assess muscle mass in older adults.

Longitudinal Associations Between Walking Speed and Amount of Self-reported Time Spent Walking Over a 9-Year Period in Older Women and Men

J.R. Best, T. Liu-Ambrose, A.L. Metti, et al.

J Gerontol A Biol Sci Med Sci. 2018;73(9):1265-1271

In this longitudinal study, we hypothesized that early mobility limitations would contribute to later decreases in physical activity to a larger degree than the reciprocal association of early decreases in physical activity to later mobility limitations.

Identification of frailty by the use of the SEGAm scale (part A) in geriatrical consultation

A.A. Zulfiqar

Geriatr Psychol Neuropsychiatr Vieil. 2018;16(3):269-277

A prospective, observational study was performed in subjects aged over 75 years, coming from the first neuro-geriatric consultation, from July 3, 2017 to August 18, 2017, included in the CHU Rouen, and benefiting from frailty screening through the use of the grid SEGAm (part A); this correlated with the subjective opinion of the nurse.

Comparing Mini Sarcopenia Risk Assessment With SARC-F for Screening Sarcopenia in Community-Dwelling Older Adults

M. Yang, X. Hu, L. Xie, et al.

J Am Med Dir Assoc. 2018 Jun 13. pii: S1525-8610(18)30229-9. doi: 10.1016/j.jamda.2018.04.012. [Epub ahead of print]

The Mini Sarcopenia Risk Assessment (MSRA), a new sarcopenia screening tool, has 2 versions: MSRA-7 (full version, 7 items) and MSRA-5 (short version, 5 items).

We aimed to compare the diagnostic values of MSRA-7 and MSRA-5 to SARC-F for screening sarcopenia.

Leisure-time physical activity at moderate and high intensity is associated with parameters of body composition, muscle strength and sarcopenia in aged adults with obesity and metabolic syndrome from the PREDIMED-Plus study

N. Rosique-Esteban, N. Babio, A. Díaz-López, et al.

Clin Nutr. 2018 Jun 6. pii: S0261-5614(18)30209-7. doi: 10.1016/j.clnu.2018.05.023. [Epub ahead of print]

We aimed to examine the associations of leisure-time physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) with the prevalence of sarcopenia, body composition and muscle strength among older adults having overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome, from the PREDIMED-Plus trial.

SARC-F for sarcopenia screening in community-dwelling older adults: Are 3 items enough?

M. Yang, X. Hu, L. Xie, et al.

Medicine (Baltimore). 2018;97(30):e11726

A 3-item SARC-F (termed SARC-F-3 in our study) was recently suggested as a screening tool for sarcopenia.

The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic value of SARC-F-3 to SARC-F in community-dwelling older people.

The impact of sarcopenia on incident homebound status among community-dwelling older adults: A prospective cohort study

K. Uemura, H. Makizako, S. Lee, et al.

Maturitas. 2018;113:26-31

Sarcopenia had a strong impact on the risk of becoming homebound. Particularly in old-old subjects, sarcopenia and physical inactivity may impair people's ability to engage in activities outside the home much more than either their mental status or their level of social participation.
