Effects of branched-chain amino acids and vitamin D supplementation on physical function, muscle mass and strength, and nutritional status in sarcopenic older adults undergoing hospital-based rehabilitation: A multicenter randomized controlled trial

I. Takeuchi, Y. Yoshimura, S. Shimaz, et al.

Geriatr Gerontol Int. 2019;19(1):12-17

The aim was to investigate the effects of branched-chain amino acids and vitamin D supplementation on physical function, muscle strength, muscle mass, and nutritional status in sarcopenic older adults undergoing hospital-based rehabilitation.

Higher dietary nitrate intake is associated with better muscle function in older women

M. Sim, J.R. Lewis, L.C. Blekkenhorst, et al.

J Cachexia Sarcopenia Muscle. 2019 Mar 24. doi: 10.1002/jcsm.12413. [Epub ahead of print]

The role of higher habitual nitrate intake as part of a typical diet on muscle function in ageing has not been investigated. In this article a cross-sectional study of relationships between dietary nitrate and measures of muscle function in older community-dwelling Australian women (n = 1420, ≥70 years) was undertaken.

Leucine co-ingestion augments the muscle protein synthetic response to the ingestion of 15 g protein following resistance exercise in older men

A.M. Holwerda, K.J.M. Paulussen, M. Overkamp, et al.

Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab. 2019 May 21. doi: 10.1152/ajpendo.00073.2019. [Epub ahead of print]

We investigated whether co-ingestion of 1.5 g free leucine with a single, 15 g bolus of protein further augments the post-prandial muscle protein synthetic response during recovery from resistance-type exercise in older men.

Consequences of applying the new EWGSOP2 guideline instead of the former EWGSOP guideline for sarcopenia case finding in older patients

J. Reiss, B. Iglseder, R. Alzner, et al.

Age Ageing. 2019 May 21. pii: afz035. doi: 10.1093/ageing/afz035. [Epub ahead of print]

We examined the consequences of applying the new EWGSOP2 algorithm for sarcopenia screening instead of the former EWGSOP algorithm (EWGSOP1) in geriatric inpatients.

Effects of higher habitual protein intake on resistance-training-induced changes in body composition and muscular strength in untrained older women: A clinical trial study

H.C. Nabuco, C.M. Tomeleri, P.S. Junior, et al.

Nutr Health. 2019;25(2):103-112

Aging is accompanied by progressive and accentuated decline in muscular strength and skeletal muscle mass, affecting health and functional autonomy. Both resistance training (RT) and diet are strategies that may contribute to improvement in the health of the elderly.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of higher habitual protein intake on RT-induced changes in body composition and strength in untrained postmenopausal women.

Smoking and Diabetes as Predictive Factors of Accelerated Loss of Muscle Mass in Middle-Aged and Older Women: A Six-Year Retrospective Cohort Study

N. Lee, C.J. Choi

J Womens Health (Larchmt). 2019 May 23. doi: 10.1089/jwh.2018.7527. [Epub ahead of print]

Preservation of muscle mass during aging reduces the risk of frailty and age-related chronic diseases. We investigated the lifestyle, psychological factors, and common cardiometabolic diseases associated with accelerated muscle loss in middle-aged and older women.

Physical frailty in older men: prospective associations with diet quality and patterns

T.J. Parsons, E. Papachristou, J.L. Atkin, et al.

Age Ageing. 2019;48(3):355-360

Increasing numbers of older adults are living with frailty and its adverse consequences. We investigated relationships between diet quality or patterns and incident physical frailty in older British men and whether any associations were influenced by inflammation.

High flavonoid cocoa supplement ameliorates plasma oxidative stress and inflammation levels while improving mobility and quality of life in older subjects: a double blind randomized clinical trial

L. Munguia, I. Rubio-Gayosso, I. Ramirez-Sanchez, et al.

J Gerontol A Biol Sci Med Sci. 2019 May 6. pii: glz107. doi: 10.1093/gerona/glz107. [Epub ahead of print]

The age-related decline in mass, strength and performance of skeletal muscle is associated with loss of independence, falls risk, disability, institutionalization and death.

To determine whether a cocoa supplement enriched in flavonoids can improve plasma markers of oxidative stress and inflammation, physical performance and frailty in middle and older age subjects, we conducted a two-phase, randomized, double blind, clinical trial.

Effects of dietary patterns and low protein intake on sarcopenia risk in the very old: The Newcastle 85+ study

A. Granic, N. Mendonça, A.A. Sayer, et al.

Clin Nutr. 2019 Jan 21. pii: S0261-5614(19)30011-1. doi: 10.1016/j.clnu.2019.01.009. [Epub ahead of print]

The aim was to investigate the association between healthy dietary patterns DPs and the risk of sarcopenia over 3 years, and to determine whether protein intake influences this relationship in community-dwelling older adults from the Newcastle 85 + Study.

Higher protein intake is associated with a lower likelihood of frailty among older women, Kuopio OSTPRE-Fracture Prevention Study

M. Isanejad, J. Sirola, T. Rikkonen, et al.

Eur J Nutr. 2019 May 7. doi: 10.1007/s00394-019-01978-7. [Epub ahead of print]

Nordic nutrition recommendations (2012) suggest protein intake ≥ 1.1 g/kg body weight (BW) to preserve physical function in Nordic older adults. However, no published study has used this cut-off to evaluate the association between protein intake and frailty. This study examined associations between protein intake, and sources of protein intake, with frailty status at the 3-year follow-up.
