The CEMI, Centre On Aging  where the Department of Geriatrics, Neurosciences and Orthopaedics has its own Headquarter,   was inaugurated in 1998 and since then it has been considered a unique environment in which care, research and education form an inspiring and stimulating continuum. The CEMI has operated as a natural laboratory for the Italian Ministry of Health and for the Ministry of Welfare, for its vision of an integrated approach to the problems of a rapidly ageing population. It is a seven-store facility with a 24-bed acute-care ward, an intensive rehabilitation and orthogeriatric unit  comprising 46 beds, a day-hospital with 20 beds and an outpatient clinic including several specialised centres . The CEMI occupies an entire building, which is physically separated from the main university hospital. The Centre is equipped with a DXA scanner as well as state-of-the-art instruments for noninvasive cardiological and respiratory examinations. The Centre on Aging a fully computerised facility controlled by a dedicated system manager who runs a state-of-the art server allowing the necessary technological sophistication. In addition to the facilities on campus, the researchers can count on the newly established Biogerontology Laboratory. The lab is equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation for proteomic and genomic analyses, besides standard equipment for sample processing and storage.

The staff of the Centre on Aging includes a number of high level scientists. Fifteen medical doctors hold tenure-track academic positions, fifteen have been contracted for patients’ care management and there are over 20 fellows. Everybody has a MD degree, but many also have a PhD degree, and some holds a Master degree in Statistics or Public Health.

On the same facility, The Healthy Aging Centre works in strict connection with the Geriatric Outpatient Clinics, the Rehabilitative Medicine Outpatient Clinics and the Geriatric Day Hospital  in fact, all subjects, either healthy or with stable, chronic conditions, visited in these settings are referred to the Centre for preventive or maintenance exercise programs, while patients attending the Centre who undergo exacerbations of their chronic condition are sent to those facilities for clinical investigations and treatments.
