What are the main aims of the SPRINTT trial?
The SPRINTT project is the largest European clinical study aimed at investigating whether physical disability may be prevented in older subjects with physical frailty and sarcopenia.
Two interventions will be compared in the SPRINTT trial:
1) A multicomponent intervention, based on physical activity and nutrition counselling, with support of specific technological devices;
2) A healthy aging lifestyle education programme.
The study will be conducted in 1500 community-living people aged 70 years and older, across 11 European countries (16 recruitment sites across Europe). The duration of the clinical trial will last approximately 3 years.
Main inclusion criteria:
- Age ≥ 70 years old;
- Having reduced muscle mass, i.e. sarcopenia;
- Having reduced physical performance, measured using a combination of three tests: not losing balance in three different positions without arm support, usual gait speed in a 4 meter walk, total time needed to get up and sit down 5 times from a chair without using arms.
- Being able to walk 400 m in less than 15 minutes.
